Sponsor a school project

Over the years we have delivered a number of education projects. Some have only been possible due to the generous sponsorship of individuals and organisations from around the Clyde catchment.

We have recently launched a website for Clyde in the Classroom. We hope this will help support the project, deliver new ICT learning outcomes and further raise the profile of the Foundation.

Participating schools put a one-third contribution towards Clyde in the Classroom. Historically, the remainder has been sourced by sponsorship and another one-third contribution from a Scottish Natural Heritage grant, but this is due to cease in 2012. In other words, we need continued financial support to make this project work.

There are a number of good reasons why you would want to sponsor Clyde in the Classroom. We offer both “Local” and “Clyde-Wide” sponsorship opportunities.

“Local sponsorship” provides a chance to help support both your school and your local river. The project encourages children to look after their local environment and these outcomes will benefit the whole community. Plus it is a unforgettable experience for the school in your local area.

“Clyde-wide sponsorship” provides an exceptional opportunity to help spread the important message of environmental awareness and community stewardship of the river resource throughout the Clyde catchment – home to approximately one-third of the Scottish population.
Perhaps the best reasons are made clear by the schools themselves.

Since 2001, over 40 different organisations have sponsored the Clyde in the Classroom project, from angling clubs to local businesses. Each are mentioned in our annual Clyde in the Classroom newsletters, but here is a short list of sponsors.

BAE Systems have been a major supporter of Clyde in the Classroom in recent years and was proud to assist the Foundation in delivering the project to a landmark 10,000 pupils in 2010.

During coverage of the event, Charles Thompson, Communications Director at BAE Systems Surface Ships, explained:

“Our business has strong ties with the Clyde, with our shipyards at both Govan and Scotstoun, so we are delighted to pledge our support to this project and help encourage young people to take an interest in our iconic river, its importance and preservation”.

The Paisley Abercorn Angling Club sponsored Renfrewshire Council’s St James’ Primary school to participate in Clyde in the Classroom 2011. Two representatives from the club joined the pupils for the release day at Pollock House weir on the White Cart Water.

For the anglers it was a great opportunity to see first-hand how pupils (and future club members!) are gaining a growing awareness of the importance of the freshwater resource in their local catchment area.

In June 2011 Zara Gladman, a PhD researcher at the University of Glasgow, participated in “I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here!” and was a winner in the ‘Ecology Zone’. Zara used the prize money to sponsor a school in Glasgow to take part in Clyde in the Classroom 2012. Thank you Zara.
